zeiss 135mm f2 apo sonnar ze mount lens photos

Beautiful black and white photo of a perfect crescent moon over Queens. Zoom in and have a look at the tremendous fine detail captured on the moon’s surface. This would make a wonderful large statement piece in a simple gallery frame almost anywhere in the home.

Taken with a Carl Zeiss 135mm f2 Apo Sonnar lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III camera. Tripod. 30 second exposure. Remote trigger.

zeiss 100mm f2 makro planar ze mount lens for canon

This is a close-up artistic composition of a painter’s workspace with a playful approach to depth of field. There is almost nothing in sharp focus in this image except for the dry paint swirls where a single ray of sunlight happened to be shining across my ‘canvas‘ that is this image. Taken with one of the most artistic lenses I own, the Carl Zeiss 100mm f2 Makro Planar ZE for Canon. Shot with the aperture wide open at f/2 to create the extremely shallow depth of focus.

bird of paradise

zeiss 50mm f2 makro planar ze mount lens for canon

It’s time for a warmer image to get us out of the winter rut.

This is a beautiful bird of paradise seen in San Diego. I adore the crisp focus on the water droplets hanging off the leaves (dew droplets actually), and the soft background that brings the flower right out of the photo. The morning light is so natural and comforting too. This would be beautiful in a 20×30 framed print in an entry way or beach house.

The overhead gallery style lighting shone just right on this sculpture of a hand poised in a calming meditative pose. This image would be perfect for a medium sized print or canvas in an entryway, workout room, or a yoga studio.

roped in

Zeiss 50mm f1.4 lens

This is a black and white abstract composition of Orly Genger’s rope installation in Maidson Square Park. The exhibit was actually about brightly colored ropes in yellow, red, and blue, but I thought that the crisp detail translated better for this close up composition. Over 100,000 pounds of rope was used in total, and it was definitely one of the more impressive installations I’ve seen.

locked up

Canon 135mm f2 lens

I absolutely love what you can find in New York if you slow down and take a look around. I found this bright green padlock in the 34th Street subway station while waiting for the F train one day. The bright color stood out and caught my eye, but what really made this shot interesting was the soft orange and yellow background colors showing through the locked gate. The subways have some fascinating images, but before I took this photo I never imagined that such vibrant colors had a place in the darkest place in the city. Taken with a Canon 135mm f2 lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III camera. The aperture was wide open at f/2 in order to pull the subject out towards your eye and create the softest background possible to contrast against the sharp focus of the metal lock.

lava

Zeiss 135mm f2 apo sonnar lens EF mount for Canon

Within 10 minutes of waking up this morning, a normal (beautiful, but normal) sunrise was replaced with this gigantic, dense, lava-like cloud. I haven’t been more wow’d by a sunrise in a long time. Taken with a Canon 5D Mark III and a Carl Zeiss 135mm f2 APO SONNAR lens mounted on a tripod and set to f/11.And, as with all the images on this site, this is straight out of the camera with no post-processing.

walk this way

zeiss 135mm apo sonnar lens

It’s really difficult to get nice color out of a monotone scene, especially when the lighting is low, but this photo turned out to have a wonderful palette. The scene feels cold, but the light feels warm, and I love the composition with a man and a woman following each other on a walk to get out of the snow. The fantastic apochromatic qualities of the Zeiss 135mm f2 sonnar lens combined with the exceptional metering abilities of the Canon 1DX made this photo one of my favorites.

celebrate

carl zeiss 100mm makro planar ef mount lens for canon

It’s time to ring in the New York of 2014, so let’s celebrate! After today, this image would make a wonderful artistic piece in any kitchen or dining area with a simple single mat black gallery frame that showcases the crisp focus and detail of the glass, and the soft out of focus background of the wine bottles.

Taken with a Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens, which produces the most beautiful bokeh of any lens I’ve ever used… backgrounds are incredibly soft with a very smooth transition between in-focus and out-of-focus areas.

holidays

carl zeiss 100mm f2 makro planar lens ef mount canon

This is one of my favorite photos taken over the holidays. It translates incredibly well with the ultra crisp focus, the sparkling edges of the ornaments and lights, and the glowing background reflections on the picture frames. Overall, the image is a little dark, but it makes me remember those times when I got up in the middle of the night to peak at the Christmas tree as a little kid. This would look fantastic in a medium size print with a very simple  white mat, black gallery frame.

Taken with a Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar EF-mount lens at f/5.6.

serene

zeiss 100mm makro planar manual focus lens for canon

I love the magic that evening light creates. This is an ordinary statue with worn surfaces and washed out colors that suddenly came alive with feeling when I took this close up shot in the late evening while the sun was setting. The colors popped, the shadow divided the composition nicely, and the feeling of serenity that I’m sure the artist intended for this piece suddenly came shining through. This would make an AMAZING large canvas piece! Taken with the most artistic lens I know of… the Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar.

intraordinary

vaperture, object photos, unexpected colors in photos

This object is extraordinary to my eyes, but only within the confines of this photograph…  “intraordinary”.

It’s a close-up with context image of a completely non-extraordinary hand railing next to the East River in Manhattan taken in the late evening hours of August with a Zeiss 25mm f2 manual focus lens, aperture wide open at f/2, shutter speed of 1/1600. The hand rail itself is anything but spectacular, but the image created here is just gorgeous. The dark and subdued drawing style of this lens, which is completely unique to this lens as far as I have seen, combined with the drama of the evening light and the beautiful bokeh that Zeiss lenses are famous for, created something extraordinary out of an ordinary object that has zero relevance outside of this photo.

fallen

fall leaf pictures, zeiss 28mm f2 manual focus lens, fall leaf photos

This is one of the first fallen leaves I came across in early September on a neighborhood basketball court. The evening sun was hitting is just right to make it stand out and catch my eye.

I used a Zeiss 28mm f2 manual focus lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III with the aperture wide open and my lens right at the minimum focus distance for the lens. I love the close-up with context view that shooting very close with a wide angle lens provides, and ever since I experimented with this technique, the minimum focus distance is probably the first spec that I look at whenever I’m considering a new lens. The usual alternative of using a macro lens for close-up work can also yield really great photos, but they are completely different than a close up with a wide angle. There is no context with a macro lens… it’s all about the detail of the object being captured. A close-up with a wide angle creates a story though, and that’s what I love about the technique.

This image came out of the camera with a very 3D look at feel that I loved as soon as the shot appeared on my screen, and it’s the photo that started me down the path of trying to perfect the “close-up with context” view.
