old school

Zeiss 35mm f1.4 manual focus lens

Wonderful shallow-depth-of-field image of an old school bike lock seen in the West Village of Manhattan where those fancy new-fangled locks just won’t do. I love images like this where anyone who has lived in New York for a while would probably recognize this as something seen in Manhattan. I love the smooth dreamy out of focus background just as much as I love the sharp three-dimensionality of the lock itself. Taken with one of the finest lenses I’ve ever worked with… the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon. It’s a much harder lens to use than it’s little brother, the Zeiss 35mm f2, but the results are head-and-shoulders better. The 35/2 is a “punchier” lens with higher contrast and slightly more saturated colors straight out of the camera, but the 35/1.4 captures far more fine detail and produces much better subject isolation because of it’s larger aperture and enhanced light-gathering ability.

nymphaea

Canon 85mm f1.2 lens

I love the vertical composition and the sharp, sharp focus on the petals of this tropical waterlilly, or Nymphaea if we are going to be proper about it. This image was taken with a Canon 85mm f1.2 lens which is known for it’s sharpness and beautiful soft backgrounds, both of which are showcased very well in this photograph. Perfect for a large canvas or simple gallery frame.

chained

Zeiss 50mm f2 Makro Planar used on a Canon 5D Mark III

I adore shallow depths of field and a soft out of focus backgrounds that pull the subject out of the photo towards you, and that’s exactly what’s happening in this photo.

My focus point was on the center of this chain, and if you zoom in and look closely, you’ll see an incredible amount of detail on the chain itself. I like the composition too… I think it’s an interesting photo that really demonstrates the strengths of the lens that I happened to be using at the time, the Zeiss 50mm Makro Planar. The aperture was wide open at f/2 for this photo, which is why the bokeh is so beautiful, and why the photo has the effect that it does.
