tulip city

Zeiss 21mm f2.8 manual focus Distagon lens

It’s not the tulips that make this photo so original… it’s the barely noticeable, out-of-focus, city skyline in the background. Using a wide angle lens incredibly close to the subject allowed this shot to come together just the way I wanted it, and I’m continually astounded at the vibrant colors, the sharp detail, and the 3-dimensionality that the Zeiss 21mm f2.8 lens produces, even wide open at f/2.8 for this photograph.

the ride home

Zeiss 28mm f2 Distagon manual focus lens

B&W hip shot of a man enjoying the relaxing view from the Roosevelt Island TRAM at the end of his work day. The TRAM is one of the most civilized forms of public transportation in New York City, so if you haven’t taken the trip yet, you certainly should. The views of stunning, and most of the TRAM regulars believe in keeping the ride quiet as they decompress from their days on the “big island”. Taken with a Zeiss 28mm f2 Distagon lens from the hip with the focus point planned for the gentleman’s reflection in the window, and then cropped to a square 1:1 format.

Zeiss 35mm f2 Distagon lens

Desolate, lonely, but strikingly beautiful sail boat dock in the middle of winter. There are no sails to be had here, but the inverted reflections of the wood posts and large masts in the distance set this image off, and the calm crisp atmosphere makes this photo a special one. The evening light and the setting sun provided a beautiful backdrop and a backlit contrast on the dock itself that made it perfect for a B&W capture. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f2 Distagon lens mounted on a Canon 5DIII camera.

This guy had the right idea last summer… taking a peaceful nap in the shade of one of the gorgeous trees in Madison Square Park. I love the grainy-ness and the deep blacks in the image… they make it more interesting and artistic than just a standard sharp focus photo that you’ll see much more often. Street photography is so difficult in New York, but when you nail one, you really get something special. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon lens at f/2.

Reality has a way of taking it’s toll on all of us. I saw this gentleman resting in Central Park in early fall… taking in the scenery around him, and wishing perhaps he wasn’t so tired. I love the grainy, cinematic feel of this photograph, and the stunning tonality throughout the image. Taken with a Canon 135mm f2 L series lens at f/2.

Black and white photo of a beautiful long needle pine in North Carolina in a town called Pinehurst which is famous for it’s pines. The single ray of sunshine gave the image some contrast, and the shallow depth of field with only a few strands in sharp focus gave it a really nice artistic feel. Perfect for a simple gallery frame. untitled

Zeiss 100mm f2 makro planar lens

Sometimes a photograph turns out better than you expected… and what a wonderful surprise that is when it happens! I hovered the lens over a pile of dead leaves that happened to have a ray of sunshine scurrying across them, opened the aperture all the way to f/2 to cut the plane of focus down to just a few millimeters, let my breath leave me to steady myself, and took this photo. The colors are astounding. The structure of the leaf is astounding. The artistic rendering with the vast majority of the image out of focus is astounding. I wasn’t expecting this, but it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Taken with a Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar, which is a true artist’s lens.

soft

Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar ZE lens

The tiny leaves of this plant look like they would run so softly across your skin.

There are two ironies in this image: 1) most of the image is slightly out of focus, 2) it was taken in broad daylight on a bright sunny day. The aperture of my lens was set wide open (f/2) to give that soft feel to the photo, the shutter speed was 1/6000 to limit the amount of light coming into the camera, and my exposure compensation was -1.7 to create an even darker image. No post-processing… just good use of the camera’s features to produce the image I wanted.

Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens which is famous for the soft blurry quality of its backgrounds (bokeh).

motion

Zeiss 50mm makro planar lens

I’m fascinated with the art of capturing motion within a still photograph, and this is why! Look at the streams of light from the traffic that past through this view during the 30 second exposure time. Look closely at both levels of the bridge, and on both lanes of the FDR Drive below… a white stream from headlights traveling north, and a red stream from brake lights traveling south. It’s just a wonderful representation of what New York is all about… constant, constant motion…

Zeiss 100mm makro planar lens for canon ef mount

This photo was taken immediately after a thunderstorm over the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. The sun began a 20-30 second process of blasting through the storm clouds to reveal the bright blue sky behind them, and as it was doing so, it put a serious light show on display. The colors and sharpness that the Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens is capable of are outstanding, and I can’t wait to see this as a medium-large size print that allows all the rich detail to shine through… pun intended.

snowsuit

Zeiss 135mm apo sonnar f2 manual focus lens

What is is that makes us want to run our hands through the snow whenever we get the chance? Is is the little pile that it makes in front of our hand? Is is the clear path that gets left behind it? Is is the impending snowball that’s bound to get made? Or is it just the warmth of our favorite snowsuits and gloves when we get to run out to play in the first snow of the season as children… I think that’s it…

cold

Zeiss 135mm f2 lens black and white photos

Some pictures are worth 1000 words… this one is only worth one, cold. You can feel how cold it is outside in this image. This was taken very late at night with only the light of a single streetlamp. The wind was howling and everyone escaped the cold into their warm apartments for the night. It’s a very simple composition so I had to fight the tendency to start increasing the exposure to get a brighter image, but that immediately took the feeling away from the photo. This is exactly how it looked to my eye, and that’s what I love to capture in every photo I take.

grey

zeiss 135mm f2 manual focus apo sonnar lens

There is such a special grey light that only snow creates. Rainy days have a grey cast to them too, but it’s different than snow. There is a softness about the snow grey, and a dreariness to rain grey. It’s hard to describe, but the images feel completely different even though they have the exact same tonality. Take a look at ‘its just so’ and you might see what I mean. ‘grey’ is soft, grainy, and has a quiet feeling to it, while ‘its just so’ has a dreary somber feeling. They are admittedly different subjects, but they were taken at the same time of the day, and both shot in black and white. I could see either work being a nice seasonal floating canvas piece in any room with an earth tone decor.

make a wish

zeiss 135mm f2 apo sonnar lens ef mount

Yes, this is a photograph. And no, there has been no photoshopping. This image was taken with a 30-second exposure at 3am using a Zeiss 135mm f2 lens mounted on a Canon 1DX. The camera remained stationary for the first 20 seconds of the exposure, and then panned right very slowly and steadily for the remaining 10 seconds to “draw” the tail of the moon. The moon was an enormous, beautiful crescent this night, and it was completely by chance that I couldn’t sleep and happened to notice it out the window. Incredibly rare opportunity, and this image has a prized place in my collection from now on. Make a wish upon the moon for the New Year!
