february sunrise

Zeiss 50mm f2 Makro Planar manual focus lens

This is one of my all time favorite sunrise photos because of the unusual and striking color palette that, even after shooting hundred of sunrises, I still haven’t seen before. The soft muted reds, oranges, blues and greys really look like winter to me, which is perfect since this is one of the last February sunrises I shot. Normally I would recommend printing sunrises on canvas and mounting them stretched to display, but this palette is so elegant that I think I would prefer a standard, simple gallery frame for this one. Taken with a Zeiss 50mm f2 Makro Planar manual focus lens on February 25th, 2014.

Please feel free to check out the February Sunrise Collection as well. The palettes in this triptych display incredibly well together even though the photos were all taken at completely different times of the year, and two of the photos are actually sunsets, not sunrises.

rush hour

zeiss 135mm apo sonnar lens

A typical scene almost anywhere in Manhattan at almost anytime of the day, especially during rush hour. The morning sunshine blasting through from East to West across 62nd Street as it intersects First Ave created a wonderfully contrasty image here, and the composition is very cramped to illicit the same feeling you get if you were sitting in your car on this very street… something New Yorkers are quite familiar with. A classic image for anyone who recognizes that there is only one place this photo could have been taken… Manhattan. Also notice that the traffic light is green 🙂 Taken with a Carl Zeiss 135mm Apo Sonnar lens.

can’t walk can’t talk

Canon 50mm f1.2 lens

This was one of those moments in New York when you stop for a split second and appreciate what you’ve got. I came across this homeless Vet outside of Madison Square Garden last summer, saw his sign, and just felt that I needed to photograph him. It’s not easy to impress a New Yorker, but “can’t walk. can’t talk. please help.” stopped me in my tracks for a few minutes. Taken with a Canon 50mm f1.2 lens on a 5D Mark III.

The intensity and warmth of the sun shining through the harsh winter thunderstorm clouds onto the steeple of this Asheville cathedral struck a very spiritual cord with me, and I tried to capture this beautiful moment as purely as possible without altering anything after the photo was taken. This scene was only visible for a few seconds before the fast moving clouds passed and shielded out the sun. Taken with a Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar manual focus lens.

Calm, crisp reflections of a docked sailboat and the surrounding marina on a February evening during sunset. As you all know by now, my favorite images tend to be the ones that capture a feeling rather than an image, and this photograph is no exception. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f2 Distagon lens.

Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ZE mount lens photos

Noticing unexpected color in unusual places is one of the qualities that got me interested in photography, and I’m always astounded at how often this happens in New York. This was taken on a W 23rd Street stoop on my way to High Line Park. The subject matter is completely uninteresting, but the colors make it artful and alluring. I could see this on a small size canvas in a living area adding a slash of color to an earth-toned interior. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f1.4 lens with a Canon 5D Mark III camera.

Stunningly detailed black and white photograph of the steel globe on display in Columbus Circle on the Upper West Side. The globe with all seven continents represented, is particularly relevant now with the Olympic Games bringing the world together in celebration of global unity and the spirit of friendly competition. This image would look phenomenal as a white frame, white mat gallery frame in almost any setting. Taken with a Canon 24-70II zoom lens.

Zeiss 50mm f2 Makro Planar ZE mount for Canon 5D Mark III

A black and white photo of a soft white rose on Valentine’s Day that would make a lovely framed piece in almost any area of the home. This was taken with a fairly large aperture in an effort to create a shallow depth of field with most of the image out of focus for that soft feeling that these roses had in real life. sunstreak

zeiss 100mm f2 ZE mount Makro Planar lens photos

The sky has some of the most beautiful photographs just waiting to be captured, but only if you’re watching. Images like this come and go so quickly, and most of them are truly once in a lifetime shots since most of them will never happen the same way again. This orange streak of sunshine worked it’s way through these delicate clouds and turned an otherwise flat, uninteresting sky into a scene with color, definition, and feeling. Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens, which isn’t really the right tool for the job, but it was all I had a available at the time. And, I’m glad it was available because this image was completely different within 10 seconds.

Color photograph of an artists diverse selection of brushes organized in jars in her studio. The subdued colors are wonderful, as is the shallow depth of field that mimics the feeling of peeking through her supplies, which is something I love to do. This would make a gorgeous small 11×14 or 16×20 canvas. Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar manual focus lens mounted on a Canon 5DIII camera at f/2.

queens canvas

zeiss 135mm f2 apo sonnar

For those of you who live in New York and don’t have an eastern exposure in your apartment, I highly recommend that you take a look in that direction early in the morning whenever you can. The sun paints on a different canvas every morning over Queens, and you’ll be inspired and impressed by what you see. The 59th Street Bridge provides the perfect architectural contrast to these soft, painterly sunrises, and this is just one more fantastic example. Beautiful image for large 20×30 or 30×45 floating canvas print. Taken with a Zeiss 135mm f2 Apo Sonnar lens at f/11, 1/1600.

zeiss 35mm f2 ZE mount lens

Beautiful grainy, film style photo of one of most relaxing fishing docks I’ve ever been to outside of a wonderful B&B in Mystic, CT called the Steamboat Inn. This was taken just as the sun was setting on a very cold, crisp evening in February. The water was so still that reflections were visible all the way out to the bay, and it was quiet and peaceful enough to hear a pin drop. Great photo for a classic medium-sized gallery frame. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f2 lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III camera, f/5.6, 1/30 handheld, ISO 400.

heavy

Zeiss 135mm f2 apo sonnar lens

The latest February snowstorm gave New Yorkers some of the wettest, heaviest snow of the season, and the branches of this tree are excited for it to stop. I love the cold color tones in this photo, and slightly out of focus footprints in the background that make the image interesting without taking away from the snowfall centerpiece. The light and contrast on the tree is marvelous, but the thought of this storm makes me wish for a ‘fireplace’. Now that we’ve seen the ‘tinder’, it’s time for the embers. The beautiful glowing embers at the bottom of the fireplace, and the lovely detailed shadows along the walls, make this a photography that you can feel all the way into your bones. The warmth is almost palpable. This would make a fantastic large statement piece in a den. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f2 lens, 1/50 handheld, f/5.6, no post processing.

tinder

Zeiss 35mm f2 ZE mount lens

Gorgeous black and white photo of flames dancing in the center of a fireplace on an incredibly cold night in Mystic, CT. The intense contrast that the flames gave this miniature scene is lovely, and the level of detail captured by the lens is only amplified by the brilliance of this natural lighting. I decided to add a level of abstractness to this photo by shooting is drastically underexposed and by locking the exposure on the brightest part of the image (the flame) to intentionally underexpose the shadows even more. This resulted in a beautiful fading effect from complete black around the edges into a bright, details image in the center… almost like a natural frame. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f2 lens mounted on a Canon 5DIII DSLR camera, 1/40 handheld, f/5.6.

Semi abstract image of the intricate and beautiful roots of a small bonsai tree. The colors in the foreground and background are gorgeous, as is the detail captured in the center of the image. I love shallow depth of field photos like this where the focus guides your eye to the subject of the image, and then the fall off to the surrounding out of focus areas allows your eye to explore the more abstract and artistic rendering of the lens. This is a photograph of a stunning sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains taken a few hours after a rainstorm passed through. The soft colors melted into an image that looks more like a painting than a photograph, and that makes this a very special image for me. This is available as 1 of 50 limited edition archival pigment prints, canvas recommended, but a simple gallery frame would be beautiful as well. Taken with a Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens, f/8.

zeiss 135mm f2 apo sonnar ZE mount lens for Canon

It’s the subtle things in this image that I love.. the myriad of sparkling street lamps… the detail captured in the rock wall and trees in the foreground… and the shadows hinting at the presence of a few buildings in the distance. It’s a very pleasant image to stare at for a while, but it still conveys the severity of the weather this winter.
