Wonderfully detailed B&W photo of a summertime marina full of docked boats in Noank, CT. This is a great nautical scene that would make a stunning gallery-style print to display in the home of anyone who treasures boating. I would recommend a medium size print for this particular image, perhaps 16×20, and a simple white frame, white mat for best display. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon lens and a Canon 5D Mark III camera.

Noticing unexpected color in unusual places is one of the qualities that got me interested in photography, and I’m always astounded at how often this happens in New York. This was taken on a W 23rd Street stoop on my way to High Line Park. The subject matter is completely uninteresting, but the colors make it artful and alluring. I could see this on a small size canvas in a living area adding a slash of color to an earth-toned interior. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f1.4 lens with a Canon 5D Mark III camera.

Desolate, lonely, but strikingly beautiful sail boat dock in the middle of winter. There are no sails to be had here, but the inverted reflections of the wood posts and large masts in the distance set this image off, and the calm crisp atmosphere makes this photo a special one. The evening light and the setting sun provided a beautiful backdrop and a backlit contrast on the dock itself that made it perfect for a B&W capture. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f2 Distagon lens mounted on a Canon 5DIII camera.

This guy had the right idea last summer… taking a peaceful nap in the shade of one of the gorgeous trees in Madison Square Park. I love the grainy-ness and the deep blacks in the image… they make it more interesting and artistic than just a standard sharp focus photo that you’ll see much more often. Street photography is so difficult in New York, but when you nail one, you really get something special. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon lens at f/2.

Stunningly detailed black and white photograph taken from the High Line Park in the MeatPacking District of NYC. This view is almost as interesting in color as it is in B&W with the exception of all of the tremendous fine details that your eye misses when the image is viewed in color. Shooting this image in B&W gives it a classic old-world look that makes it a truly timeless photograph and a familiar scene to native New Yorkers everywhere. Fine detail like this is perfect for a professional Pearl print… you’ll notice twice as much detail as you do on your computer monitor!

This photo is in celebration of the 2014 Sochi Olympics and all the athletes who participated. Taken in Rockerfeller Center New York with a Zeiss 135mm Apo Sonnar lens, which is one of my favorite performers in terms of color accuracy and vibrance. The evening light provided all the contrast to make this image stand out as a recognizable scene to any native New Yorker.

A black and white photo of a soft white rose on Valentine’s Day that would make a lovely framed piece in almost any area of the home. This was taken with a fairly large aperture in an effort to create a shallow depth of field with most of the image out of focus for that soft feeling that these roses had in real life. Taken with a Zeiss 50mm f2 Makro Planar lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III camera.

A perfect image of love and happiness for Valentines Day. I came across a cab driver taking a break to say goodbye to his wife before starting his shift and couldn’t resist capturing the moment. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon lens and cropped to a 1:1 aspect ratio. Shot at f/2.8. Looking back on this image, I wish I would have shot this at f/1.8 or f/2 to isolate my subjects a little more, but it’s still a wonderful photo that is full of feeling nonetheless.

The sky has some of the most beautiful photographs just waiting to be captured, but only if you’re watching. Images like this come and go so quickly, and most of them are truly once in a lifetime shots since most of them will never happen the same way again. This orange streak of sunshine worked it’s way through these delicate clouds and turned an otherwise flat, uninteresting sky into a scene with color, definition, and feeling. Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens, which isn’t really the right tool for the job, but it was all I had a available at the time. And, I’m glad it was available because this image was completely different within 10 seconds.

Color photograph of an artists diverse selection of brushes organized in jars in her studio. The subdued colors are wonderful, as is the shallow depth of field that mimics the feeling of peeking through her supplies, which is something I love to do. This would make a gorgeous small 11×14 or 16×20 canvas. Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar manual focus lens mounted on a Canon 5DIII camera at f/2.

Reality has a way of taking it’s toll on all of us. I saw this gentleman resting in Central Park in early fall… taking in the scenery around him, and wishing perhaps he wasn’t so tired. I love the grainy, cinematic feel of this photograph, and the stunning tonality throughout the image. Taken with a Canon 135mm f2 L series lens at f/2.

Venus partnered with a beautiful crescent moon in the early morning sky. It’s so rare to see stars in New York because of all the light pollution, but when they’re visible, it’s a gorgeous site. The blue, grey, and green undertones in the sky create a perfect canvas for this rare celestial scene. These subtle background tones will probably not show up in full details on a regular computer monitor, so be prepared to be surpassed (and very impressed) when you order this as a print. Taken with a Canon 5D Mark III and a Carl Zeiss 135mm Apo Sonnar manual focus lens at f/11 and a 5-second exposure on a tripod.

For those of you who live in New York and don’t have an eastern exposure in your apartment, I highly recommend that you take a look in that direction early in the morning whenever you can. The sun paints on a different canvas every morning over Queens, and you’ll be inspired and impressed by what you see. The 59th Street Bridge provides the perfect architectural contrast to these soft, painterly sunrises, and this is just one more fantastic example. Beautiful image for large 20×30 or 30×45 floating canvas print. Taken with a Zeiss 135mm f2 Apo Sonnar lens at f/11, 1/1600.

Beautiful grainy, film style photo of one of most relaxing fishing docks I’ve ever been to outside of a wonderful B&B in Mystic, CT called the Steamboat Inn. This was taken just as the sun was setting on a very cold, crisp evening in February. The water was so still that reflections were visible all the way out to the bay, and it was quiet and peaceful enough to hear a pin drop. Great photo for a classic medium-sized gallery frame. Taken with a Zeiss 35mm f2 lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III camera, f/5.6, 1/30 handheld, ISO 400.

The latest February snowstorm gave New Yorkers some of the wettest, heaviest snow of the season, and the branches of this tree are excited for it to stop. I love the cold color tones in this photo, and slightly out of focus footprints in the background that make the image interesting without taking away from the snowfall centerpiece. The light and contrast on the tree is marvelous, but the thought of this storm makes me wish for a ‘fireplace’. Taken with a Zeiss 135mm f2 Apo Sonnar ZE mount lens, 15 second exposure, f/2.8, tripod.
