Semi abstract image of the intricate and beautiful roots of a small bonsai tree. The colors in the foreground and background are gorgeous, as is the detail captured in the center of the image. I love shallow depth of field photos like this where the focus guides your eye to the subject of the image, and then the fall off to the surrounding out of focus areas allows your eye to explore the more abstract and artistic rendering of the lens. Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar ZE mount lens for Canon.

pines

Black and white photo of a beautiful long needle pine in North Carolina in a town called Pinehurst which is famous for it’s pines. The single ray of sunshine gave the image some contrast, and the shallow depth of field with only a few strands in sharp focus gave it a really nice artistic feel. Perfect for a simple gallery frame. Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens.

Sometimes a photograph turns out better than you expected… and what a wonderful surprise that is when it happens! I hovered the lens over a pile of dead leaves that happened to have a ray of sunshine scurrying across them, opened the aperture all the way to f/2 to cut the plane of focus down to just a few millimeters, let my breath leave me to steady myself, and took this photo. The colors are astounding. The structure of the leaf is astounding. The artistic rendering with the vast majority of the image out of focus is astounding. I wasn’t expecting this, but it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Taken with a Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar, which is a true artist’s lens.

Great black and white photo taken from a high vantage point over 1st Ave in New York facing south. The amount of detail that this tiny little Zeiss 50mm f1.4 lens pulled out of this scene is incredible, and this is an image that any true New Yorker can imagine hanging in their entry way or foyer.

I love the vertical composition and the sharp, sharp focus on the petals of this tropical waterlilly, or Nymphaea if we are going to be proper about it. This image was taken with a Canon 85mm f1.2 lens which is known for it’s sharpness and beautiful soft backgrounds, both of which are showcased very well in this photograph. Perfect for a large canvas or simple gallery frame.

This is a photograph of a stunning sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains taken a few hours after a rainstorm passed through. The soft colors melted into an image that looks more like a painting than a photograph, and that makes this a very special image for me. This is available as 1 of 50 limited edition archival pigment prints, canvas recommended, but a simple gallery frame would be beautiful as well. Taken with a Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens, f/8.

after the storm

This is the first sunrise after the snowstorm last evening. The muted greys, reds, and oranges blend so beautifully together. I haven’t seen a sunrise with a color palette this painterly in a while, and I’m excited to have this printed on a huge canvas like a 30×45. Taken with a Zeiss 135mm Apo Sonnar lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III camera, f/11, 1/10, -0.7EV.

It’s the subtle things in this image that I love.. the myriad of sparkling street lamps… the detail captured in the rock wall and trees in the foreground… and the shadows hinting at the presence of a few buildings in the distance. It’s a very pleasant image to stare at for a while, but it still conveys the severity of the weather this winter.

Beautiful black and white photo of a perfect crescent moon over Queens. Zoom in and have a look at the tremendous fine detail captured on the moon’s surface. This would make a wonderful large statement piece in a simple gallery frame almost anywhere in the home.

This is a close-up artistic composition of a painter’s workspace with a playful approach to depth of field. There is almost nothing in sharp focus in this image except for the dry paint swirls where a single ray of sunlight happened to be shining across my ‘canvas‘ that is this image. Taken with one of the most artistic lenses I own, the Carl Zeiss 100mm f2 Makro Planar ZE for Canon. Shot with the aperture wide open at f/2 to create the extremely shallow depth of focus.

The tiny leaves of this plant look like they would run so softly across your skin.
There are two ironies in this image: 1) most of the image is slightly out of focus, 2) it was taken in broad daylight on a bright sunny day. The aperture of my lens was set wide open (f/2) to give that soft feel to the photo, the shutter speed was 1/6000 to limit the amount of light coming into the camera, and my exposure compensation was -1.7 to create an even darker image. No post-processing… just good use of the camera’s features to produce the image I wanted.
Taken with a Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens which is famous for the soft blurry quality of its backgrounds (bokeh).

It’s time for a warmer image to get us out of the winter rut.
This is a beautiful bird of paradise seen in San Diego. I adore the crisp focus on the water droplets hanging off the leaves (dew droplets actually), and the soft background that brings the flower right out of the photo. The morning light is so natural and comforting too. This would be beautiful in a 20×30 framed print in an entry way or beach house.

The colors turned out to be so striking in this abstract shot of a graffitied city hand railing that I had to share this with you. The deep, vibrant browns and greens set apart by a perfectly horizontal horizon make this a special one for me. The impact that this photo has even though the subject matter is so simple and ordinary reminds me of another one of my personal favorites, the limited edition ‘intraordinary’ photograph.
This is straight out of the camera with no post-processing. Taken with a lens that I no longer own, a Canon 70-200mm f2.8mm II zoom lens. The 70-200/2.8II was a pretty phenomenal lens for a zoom, and I did enjoy using it, but it’s limitations compared to my other prime lenses didn’t justify the expense of keeping it. The newest version of this lens is a must-have for any documentary photographer though since the image quality and bokeh is truly top notch for a zoom lens.

A wonderful moment seen in Madison Square Park on a gorgeous sunny afternoon… a young couple taking a moment to block out their surroundings and enjoy an impromptu dance to a piano man set up behind them. bleak
Posted on January 10, 2014
This is a very dark, very bleak image. It was taken late at night during the last snow storm in New York. The eery composition of the intense dark shadow on the left fading into the light from the street lamp creates this scene that looks deserted… semi-post-apocalyptic… snow covered picnic tables reminiscent of of the past when families and children used to be around putting them to good use. I also like that one solitary chair sitting out of place on its own… lots of irony there. This scene looks like something you would see in a movie, or imagine while reading a book like Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.
